Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating. It is caused by overacting sweat glands (eccrine glands). Sweating cools the body down when it gets hot. However, with hyperhidrosis, the sweating happens more often, even when there is a lack of activity or any reason for an emotional response. 

Some medications may also have sweating as a side-effect.
